This two-day workshop will provide attendees with a solid understanding of Active Directory, the core of Windows based security and the driving force behind many of the weaknesses seen in corporate implementations. You will gain a clear understanding of the Active Directory architecture and its Domains, Forests and Trees and how these elements are tied together to customize your implementation of Windows. Attendees will be led through an actual AD audit using a demonstration system enabling you to see the commands and tools at work.

In the audit, you will discover how an effective organizational unit deployment can help vastly improve security and control or weaken it! Attendees will also learn all about administrative rights and will see how to accurately assess where they reside within Active Directory is made during your audit. You will complete this course with a full understanding of this critical component of Windows and ensure that your own implementation of it is accurate, secure and effective.

Learning objectives

After completing this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • recognize the importance of Active Directory in its role of security and control in Windows systems;
  • learn to organize and structure Active Directory to facilitate improved controls and understand critical areas that are often ignored;

Through an actual demonstration of An Active Directory audit you’ll learn how controls work in Forests and Tree structures and how to ensure Trusts do not negate your controls.

  • A typical directory structure should include an Empty Root Domain and you will learn why this is good practice.
  • To ensure your complete understanding you’ll learn about Sites and the Schema and how FSMO roles are managed.
  • You will also understand the role of Organizational Units in ensuring security, along with the usual roles of users and groups.
  • Finally, you’ll see how to implement sound and effective audit and logging, ensuring that not only are you protected by the implementation of good security practices but by sound and effective detective controls as well.
